How To Focus On Homework With ADHD: Vital Advice

Being a student is difficult at the best of times. Being a student with ADHD is one-hundred times harder. Not only do you have your ADHD to deal with but you frequently also have to put up with negative attitudes from peers and even professors. Thankfully the symptoms of ADHD are much more widely understood these days and there is less of a stigma. However, sometimes just getting through each and every day can seem that a Herculean task.

So, just how do you focus on your homework when you suffer from ADHD, here’s my vital advice:

Take your medication

I get that a lot of young people don’t like taking their meds. I understand that it can make you feel as if you are not yourself; as if you are somehow muted. The thing is the meds are there to help you concentrate and reign in those impulses that frequently get you into trouble. If the thought of taking meds really bothers you, see if there is any way that you can just take enough meds to get through school and into the early evening.

Don’t do it when your meds are wearing off

The best time to do your homework is an hour or so after taking your medication. Don’t be tempted to do it as soon as you get home from class or leave it until you are nearly due your next batch. Timing is crucial. Be nice to yourself!

Give yourself plenty of time

As I have already said, it is hard enough being a student without ADHD. It is, therefore, vital that you don’t leave your homework to the last minute and that you cut yourself some slack. This will avoid you finding yourself in a situation where you have to attempt to do your homework when you are feeling out of sorts.

Find some calming music to work to

It doesn’t matter what it is if it calms you down then pop those earbuds in. Music is incredibly therapeutic and if this helps keep you on message while you do your home study then well done.

Use your coping strategies

No two kids with ADHD are the same. You will no doubt have discussed some coping strategies with your physician or whoever is monitoring your medication. Homework is definitely the time when you need to be deploying all the weaponry in your arsenal.
